Many of our tutors use multiple REACH services themselves. Tutors are required to maintain high academic standards, and when the coursework starts to feel heavy, tutors turn to the resources available. It'sot uncommon to see tutors meeting in the library after work and heading to the Math Resource Center as a group to work on homework and practice new math problems.
Yes. REACH Mentors, Tutors, and SI Leaders start at $10.00 per hour for up to 20 hours/week. The pay rate increases 50¢ per hours as certification level increases. Master Tutors and SI Peer Supervisors earn the maximum rate of $11.50 per hour.
Students with documented disabilities may receive one or two private sessions per week.
Tutoring sessions for 300-level and advanced-level courses are usually conducted in small groups. Sometimes there is not enough demand for tutoring assistance for a particular course to put the small group together. Other times, there is simply no one available who can tutor that course. The tutors who have taken the upper level, advanced courses are most often near graduation and have increased time demands. Please see the REACH employment opportunities if you are interested in applying for for a tutor position for a particular course.

REACH Courses

GEN 103 and GEN104 are both computer-based intervention courses in algebra that are taught using guided instruction and mastery learning. GEN 103 is the non-STEM version of the course and is designed for students who only need MATH 105: Contemporary Mathematics for their program. GEN 104 is the STEM version of the course and is designed for students who need any MATH course beyond MATH 105 (e.g., MATH 111: College Algebra) for their program.
No, all GEN 103/104 sections are taught using the emporium model. In this classroom setting, students learn the course material using interactive computer software, as well as on-demand assistance from math tutors and a course instructor. Although this is quite different from a traditional course, we have found that most students enjoy the flexibility of our courses, as well as the personalized attention they receive.
The short answer is yes. Both GEN 103 and GEN 104 are one credit hour elective courses; however, because the courses are pass/fail, your GPA will only be affected if you fail the course. In other words, if you pass GEN 103/104, there will be a no change in your GPA, but if you fail the course, your GPA will be negatively affected (one credit hour of F)
All GEN 103/104 sections have a strict attendance policy. If you accumulate five unexcused absences during the semester, then you will automatically receive a grade of F in the course. However, we allow students the opportunity to make up their absences within a reasonable time period. We have found that students who are absent on a regular basis are generally unsuccessful in the course.
Currently, all sections of GEN 103/104 meet in Strickler Hall, Room 331. This REACH computer lab is dedicated to the GEN 103/104 program. When classes are not in session, this lab is open to all GEN 103/104 students for drop-in tutoring.
